Photovoice in Mogadishu
A participatory photographic exhibition on social inclusion
“We feel the void and emptiness associated with exclusion. We felt that we have to do something about
it and heal ourselves. We understand what we are missing in our communities”
Photovoice workshop participant, Mogadishu, October 2018
CISP in collaboration with the Somali Academy of Science and Arts and Waberi District,
organized in December 2018 a photographic exhibition on social inclusion at Peace Gardens,
Mogadishu, as part of the project “Promoting a culture of inclusion in Somalia”.
PhotoVoice is a method that uses images and messages to allow participants from different
groups and background in Mogadishu to represent their point of view and opinions on the topic
of inclusion and exclusion in their daily lives. Once shown in public spaces in Mogadishu, these
artworks can reach the wider public and open meaningful dialogues, providing a common
ground from which new ideas and relationships can be sown, contributing to create
understanding and cohesion in the community.
